Short-winged Conehead

Scientific name
Conocephalus dorsalis

Identification
Medium sized green bush cricket, 11-18 mm long (+ 8-9 mm ovipositor). Short wings, usually only reaching half way down the abdomen. Female’s ovipositor has an upward curve.

Song
Continuous, high pitched song alternating between ticking and hissing sounds. Inaudible to some people and best heard on a bat detector.

Habitat
Only recorded in D & G at the coast on saltmarsh, in stands of Sea club-rush, Bolboschoenus maritimus.

Local status
Found on a small number of coastal sites across Dumfries and Galloway.
