Hedgehog Survey

The Hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus is the UK’s only spiny mammal and populations are in decline. They are under recorded locally. We want to learn more about our local population. They can live up to 10 years old but the average is 2-3 years. Hedgehogs are native to Britain and their diet is made up of worms, slugs, beetles and caterpillars. They usually begin hibernation in November that lasts until spring but often wake up during the winter and return to hibernation if its cold. Hibernation time for hedgehogs depends on the weather.

Identification: Has thousands of 2.5mm spines covering the head and back. Grey-brown fur covers the face, chest, belly, throat and legs. Weighs up to 2kg. Has small black eyes and a pointed brown furry face. Commonly found in woodland, gardens, farmlands, grassland.
