The westerly location means the region’s climate is relatively mild and wet, and the wide diversity of habitats from coast through to uplands and mountains supports a rich and biodiverse flora and fauna. Many of Scotland’s iconic species are at the southerly edge of their range in SW Scotland, yet the mild climate supports many more southerly species at their northern limits in the UK.
