Bugs in Gardens

Between 2010 and 2012, the Dumfries and Galloway Environmental Resource Centre undertook a two year project focusing on encouraging people to record the bugs they find in their gardens. The Bugs in Gardens project aimed to raise awareness of the value of gardens for biodiversity, to teach people how to identify a range of garden invertebrates and promote wildlife friendly gardening by encouraging people to take positive action to benefit invertebrates. Participants were encouraged to record bumblebees and ladybirds in their gardens, and improve their gardens for wildlife by planting nectar-rich flowers or creating refuge areas that will provide much needed habitats for many insects.

The project ran 28 events and gathered 724 records from 101 observers directly from survey cards and online recording forms. Many thousands of invertebrate records were also collated from other sources throughout the project.
