Squares of the Month – March: NX0742 and NS2748
Ayrshire: NS2748
The Ayrshire square we are highlighting is NS2748, west of Dalry in North Ayrshire.
NS2748 encompasses Holms of Caaf, Caaf Water and part of the B780/West Kilbride Road. The habitat is dominated by improved grassland but there looks to be a diverse and interesting suite of riparian habitats along this section of Caaf Water. There is an old ironstone mine south of Langlands Farm in the NE of the square which appears to be less intensively managed and looks to have scrub and unimproved grassland. Recorders may be able to spot wildlife driving along the B780.
Wigtownshire: NX0742
The Dumfries & Galloway square we are highlighting this month is NX0742, NW of Port Logan. The Rhins Coastal Path passes through the square and includes parts of Mulhill Farm, Mull Hill, Back Port and Port Gill.
The farm is dominated by improved grassland but the habitat in and around the coastal path is not improved. The habitat here may be rough grassland, scrub or tall herbal communities. The rocky cliffs are likely to be quite steep but may yield botanical and avian interest that could be spotted from the path.
The square encompass several archaeological and cultural features including Duniehinnie Fort and Peter’s Paps, offering additional historic interest to a visit.
