SWSEIC Recording Group at Dunure, 12 June 2024
The SWSEIC recording group visited Dunure for our next visit. Six of our local recorders came on the day and the SWT’s local volunteer group also came to lend a hand. All together we recorded 349 species, although SWSEIC has yet to identify our collected samples so this number will increase. Highlights so far included two possible first for Ayrshire – the micromoth caterpillar Orange Crest Helcystogramma rufescens swept by Malcolm Haddow and Powdered Knot-horn Delplanqueia dilutella found by Lee Johnson.
Gill Smart and some of the SWT volunteers found at least 17 individual Oysterplants Mertensia maritima at the site, a fantastic find for a nationally uncommon species. A large bed of Eelgrass Zostera marina was also discovered on the day, a rather rare plant in Ayrshire.
